Japanese Knotweed is now a major problem throughout Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire. We are being called out to survey and treat an ever increasing number of sites that are contaminated with Japanese Knotweed.
Japanese Knotweed is so strong it has the ability to grow through tarmac roads, between joints and cracks in walls, buildings and concrete slabs.
Japanese Knotweed has been known to penetrate through slabs of concrete and cause major damage to the fabric of buildings and walls.
Growth rates have been recorded as fast as 2cms per day reaching a height of 3M by late summer.
The roots or Rhizome system will quickly form an extensive network that can reach several metres down and at least 4 metres around the stand of Knotweed.
There are even cases of drains and cavity walls becoming blocked with Knotweed.
The plant is one of the most invasive plants in the UK covered under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. It is an offence to plant or encourage the growth of Japanese Knotweed or even knowingly allow the plant to spread.
The simple act of cutting or disturbing the soil around the plant if not strictly managed could be classed as encouraging the Knotweed to grow. In many cases well intentioned cutting of Knotweed is the reason the Knotweed has spread.
A tiny fragment of root can quickly establish a new plant. The seeds which the plant produces in late spring are sterile.
The plant spreads from rhizomes or by pieces being transported to other sites. A small 3cm piece of rhizome can remain dormant in the soil for several years before it appears.
It is imperative that a professional and scientific approach is adopted using our "Total Weed Control Service" we are a experienced licensed contractors with trained experienced staff.
